As the first graders finish up their "Peanuts" inspired artwork, we begin a new project to get us excited about spring. First graders showed how smart they were by being able to explain the difference between organic and geometric shapes (if you're not sure what they are, ask your first grader!). They created organic shapes to draw a wide variety of flowers. After drawing them, the first graders mixed tints and shades to paint in their flowers. |

First graders have been learning about lines, specifically thick, thin, broken, and overlapped. We used these lines to fill in a background that will later have customized drawings of Snoopy and Woodstock added on. The first graders need to learn about illustrators, and with the Peanuts movie out what better illustrator to learn about than Charles Schulz! Some first grade classes have moved on to the next project, while some are putting the finishing touches on their clay cookies. They look good enough to eat!
First graders just finished using clay like dough to make cookies! They rolled out the clay with a rolling pin, cut out cookie shapes, and attached extra clay for M&M like details. When they're finished baking in the kiln, they will be painted. I'm sure they will turn out so delicious looking!
Since the first graders finished their paint palette drawings, we moved on to filling in the spots! Using the primary colors, we mixed to make the secondary colors, and painted them in color order on our palettes.
Last year in Kindergarten, we learned about Primary and Secondary colors. This year we're starting off with a review of these, and seeing how they fit into the color wheel. We talked about how artists sometimes use paint palettes to organize their colors in color order. We decided to draw our own paint palettes to display the color wheel. Once our drawing is done we will paint these!
Here are some pictures of the first graders trying out the great drawing website "Draw Island." Can you tell they're practicing their landscape drawing?
While some first grade classes are finishing their Romero Britto Color Wheels, some are starting the next project. After drawing landscapes that showed foreground, background and overlapping, first graders shared and showed these concepts via the art room document camera.
Want to read "Heartprints?" You can check it out at the Windsor Library!
This week first graders learned about, and mixed some tints and shades. Next week we will be doing something special with this paper to finish our Britto inspired work.
