Earlier in the school year the second graders spent time learning about butterflies. They even had real ones that they released into Windsor's Garden. We were all sad that the real butterflies have long since flown away, so to cheer up, we made clay ones in the art room. Now the second graders can always have their butterflies.

Second graders are finishing up their hero portraits by adding a super touch, masks! After finishing their portraits, second graders made a mask to put on their picture and actually wear. Some decided to have some fun by coloring while wearing their mask!
Second graders started their new projects in art. It was perfect timing with Veterans Day in observance because the project is all about how we can be heroes everyday! You don't need to be a superhero to help out, there are things anyone can do in their community to make a difference. Second graders are drawing a self-portrait, showing who they truly are as heroes, but will add a fun super piece to their work later.
Second graders are finishing their Paul Klee inspired warm/cool color fish. I love seeing all the bright colors the students are using!
We're finally at the point where were ready to color our Paul Klee inspired fish. The second graders learned about warm and cool colors, and where they go in the rainbow/color wheel. To help them learn, we watched a quick video about warm and cool colors. The students then had to decide which group of colors they would be if they were colors. They then used those colors to color their fish.
Well, we're not actually fishing in the art room, but we were talking about how during the summer when the weather is nice, many people enjoy being outdoors fishing. We began drawing fish, using Paul Klee's fish paintings as inspiration. We looked at real pictures of fish to see how we can use lines to draw our fish. After drawing our fish, we had time to share. They look great!
Second graders drew certain shapes 2-dimensionally, and then learned about these shapes 3-dimensionally, drawing them realistically with shading. They we be using this new knowledge to compose a work of art featuring realistic looking objects.
The second graders have just about finished painting their "Mossy" inspired turtles. We spent time in class learning a little bit about Eastern Box turtles, and used neutral colors to help us choose paint for our turtles. We noticed how the Eastern Box turtles have negative and positive space on their shells, which helped us draw out the shapes for unique shell designs. Here are some pictures of the 2nd graders having fun making their clay Mossy turtles! After the turtles were finished, 2nd graders watched a video to learn about Eastern Box Turtles, which is what Mossy is. Check out the video below!
The second graders were extra excited about coming back to art after break. It's finally time for clay! After listening to the story "Mossy," by Jan Brett, and discussing clay techniques, second graders began making clay turtles using the pinch pot method. When the turtles are done, the second graders will add chia seeds to their turtles shell so they can grow plants just like Mossy.
