Third graders got to play around with a variety of materials to try to recreate their spooky (or regular) house the best they could. They worked completely independently planning and constructing their house.
The third graders have been coming up with wonderful ways to combine shapes, lines, and texture to make architectural designs that look professional! Some students are adding extra features to their buildings to give them a creepy feel. To help inspire the designs, third graders examined some old Victorian style houses from Arlington Heights, watched a video on shapes in architecture and used a page from "I Spy Spooky Night" to look at extra details.
The third graders spent this week painting their Wildcats. They started with their main color first, then began adding tints and shades. In art the 3rd graders have been learning all about George Rodrigue and his Blue Dog. The students watched a biography video about George Rodrigue, and then used the Blue Dog as inspiration to draw Wildcats in a similar style. During the last few weeks the 3rd graders have been putting the finishing touches on their clay aliens. After sculpting them, we went and took a "field trip" to see the kiln where they were getting fired, and watched a video* to learn how clay is actually made. After the aliens were cooled off, 3rd graders were able to start painting them. The aliens were painted with contrasting colors (light/dark) to help the features stand out.
