As the 5th graders put the finishing touches on their "selfie" portraits, I can't help but think getting photographed today for school pictures was silly when our "selfie" portraits look so good! I am truly amazed by the quality of work the 5th graders are producing, and am so proud of all the hard work they put into their portraits. This week and next week they will be finishing up their portraits and adding the filters to their drawing. Before choosing a filter color, students were asked to ponder specific colors and what emotion comes to mind when they see those colors. They then listened to the story "My Blue is Happy," by Jessica Young and chose a color that they believe best suits their personality.
This week 5th graders got to try out ebony pencils. Ebony pencils create marks similar to a combination of pencil and charcoal. For this reason, ebony pencils are perfect for blending to create dramatic shadows. The selfie portraits look so real, it's scary.
Our ebony pencils have arrived, so in 5th grade art this week we used the pencils to begin shading our selfie portraits. 5th graders are learning how to shade lightly with the pencil, transition from light to dark, and blend for realistic effects.
As the 5th graders add more and more to their selfie portraits it's getting scary how realistic they look! The 5th graders have been doing an amazing job observing and noticing how they really look in the mirror, and then adding details and changing things in their portraits.
